Questions to Ask Before Leaving Your Child’s Sick Visit
A sick visit can move quickly, especially when your child is uncomfortable. Before you leave, ask the care team to explain the plan in a way you can repeat back.
Understand the plan
- What do you think is causing my child’s symptoms? What is still uncertain?
- What should we do at home, and what should we avoid?
- If medicine is recommended, how do we use it? What should we do if we have trouble giving it?
- What changes should we expect, and when should we check back if things are not improving?
Know how to get help
- Which changes mean I should call the office? Which require urgent or emergency care?
- Who can I reach after hours?
- Is there a written plan or after-visit summary I can take home?
Write down the answers or ask for written instructions. Share the relevant plan with anyone caring for your child. If you are worried or instructions are unclear, contact the clinician; do not wait for an automated summary. In an emergency, seek emergency help.
